The arteriovenous complex vertebral artery/atlanto-occipital sinus is found in the atlanto-occipital area. This venous sinus that surrounds the whole atlantal part of vertebral artery, including its vertical and horizontal divisions. The position, shape, structure and size of the atlanto-occipital sinus vary within wide limits. The diameter and length of the sinus depends on the length of atlantal part of the vertebral artery and, especially, the number and the severity of its bends. The authors selected two extreme options of the structure of the atlanto-occipital sinus: trunk and loose. Significant relationship of variants of the structure of the sinus with the skull shape and the sex is not detected. A possibility of identifying the atlanto-occipital sinus in corrosion preparations presents.</p>
<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>A layer-by-layer dissection of the atlanto-occipital area of 25 adult cadavers who died from causes not related to pathology of the vascular system of the head is carried out.
